Clarksville Dentist Selected
“Dentist of the Year”
Dr.
Joseph A. Britton of
Clarksville was named
"Dentist of the Year" by the
Tennessee Academy of General
Dentistry at its annual
meeting on August 13 in
Nashville. The Academy
of General Dentistry, the
second largest organization
in the United States
representing approximately
35,000 general dentists, has
as its standard a principle
of life long learning.
To be a member in
good standing a dentist must
go above and beyond standard
continuing education
requirements for dentists
and attend additional
courses every year.
Dr. Britton completed
the American Board of the
Academy in 1989 a level that
requires academic testing
and an oral review of dental
cases.
The Dentist of the
Year is awarded yearly by
the Academy of General
Dentistry to a dentist for
outstanding leadership in
dentistry, education and
service to their community.
Dr. Britton was selected
from an elite group of six
dentists statewide that were
nominated by their dental
peers.
A graduate of Howard
University Dental School in
Washington, D.C. in 1976,
Dr. Britton has practiced
dentistry for thirty-four
years, twenty-two of which
were in active military
service.
While in the service
Dr. Britton served as an
assistant program director
for the two year general
dentistry program mentoring
young dentists, a position
he considers one of his most
rewarding duties while in
the Army.
He retired from
active duty in 1999 at the
rank of Colonel having
supervised dental clinics in
multiple locations
worldwide.
He has practiced in
Clarksville since 1999.
Dr. Britton serves
locally as the Vice Chair of
the Clarksville/Montgomery
County Adult Literacy
Council, is a volunteer at
the Good Samaritan Ministry
and is a member of the St.
Bethlehem Civitan Club.
Dr. Britton and his
wife, Nancye, of 35 years
have two adult children.
The Brittons attend
St. Bethlehem Christian
Church.
